Essential Vitamins For Good Ocular Health

essential vitaminsVitamins are essential to good ocular health. In fact, ophthalmologists have been at the forefront of demonstrating the role of vitamins in eye disease, as evidenced by two of the largest clinical studies proving the importance of vitamins in Macular Degeneration, known as AREDS 1 and AREDS 2.

The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), sponsored by the Federal government’s National Eye Institute found that taking high levels of antioxidants and zinc could reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by about 25%.

This major clinical trial closely followed about 3,600 participants with varying stages of AMD. The results showed that the AREDS formulation, while not a cure for AMD, might play a fundamental role in helping people at high risk for developing advanced AMD keep their remaining vision.

We at Your Eye Specialists are firm believers that eye care vitamins are essential for all types of eye conditions and offer the most advanced and clinically up to date formulas. We now have unique eye care vitamin formulations that can help with Dry Eye Syndrome, Blepharitis, Glaucoma, and Macular Degeneration. Please ask our doctors about whether these vitamins can help you.

Healthy Diet For Good Vision

The best way to keep your eyes healthy is from the inside out. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fat is optimal for your body and your vision. Poor diet lacks the nutrients and vitamins that are essential for keeping your eyes healthy. Those who have poor diets can also develop disease that impacts the eye, like diabetes. Make sure to talk to your doctor about a healthy eating plan to keep your vision in great shape.

Nutrition and Vitamins for Your Eyes

While carrots have earned their reputation for boosting eyesight, they’re certainly not the only food that offers such benefits. Vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, and omega-3 fatty acids can all work wonders for your eyesight. Any food that includes these nutrients will improve your eyesight. It can be hard to keep track of everything — the important thing is to shoot for a balanced diet.

For those who are at risk for eye problems, professionals recommend a higher daily intake of the following nutrients:

  • Beta-carotene – When combined with zinc and Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene can slow the progression of macular degeneration. You can find beta-carotene in foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach.
  • Bioflavonoids – Found in tea, red wine, and citrus fruits, bioflavonoids protect against cataracts and macular degeneration.
  • Lutein – Lutein is found in foods like spinach, kale, and squash. It can help your body fight or prevent cataracts and macular degeneration.

What Is The Best Vitamin For Your Eyes

Vitamin A deficiency is a world-wide public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 250 million preschool children are vitamin A deficient. Half a million become blind every year and half of these will die within a year of becoming blind. Vitamin A deficiency will cause night blindness because of the important role vitamin A plays within the photoreceptors of the retina. Additionally, vitamin A deficiency will cause xerophthalmia, a severe form of dry eye that can cause corneal scarring and blindness. One of my mentors, Alfred Sommer, a Wilmer trained ophthalmologist and the former dean of the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, showed that a single high-dose capsule of vitamin A administered once every 6-12 months can prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with vitamin A deficiency. Since vitamin A capsules can be manufactured for only a couple of cents, this is one of the most cost-effective public health measures. Beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A is an important ingredient of AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) supplements recommend for patients with macular degeneration to prevent progression of disease. (It should be noted, however, that patients who have a history of smoking should be taking the AREDS 2 supplements which do not contain beta-carotene but rather lutein and zeaxanthin.)

I came to Dr. Vedula for lasik surgery. I've seen multiple doctors in the area, and I found him to be the best. I had an astigmatism and he assured me that I was able to have it done. He's changed my life forever. I now have 20/20 vision. I wake up in the morning without glasses, and I can go out dancing and to the beach. I highly recommend Dr.
