What Is The Best Vitamin For Your Eyes
Vitamin A deficiency is a world-wide public health concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 250 million preschool children are vitamin A deficient. Half a million become blind every year and half of these will die within a year of becoming blind. Vitamin A deficiency will cause night blindness because of the important role vitamin A plays within the photoreceptors of the retina. Additionally, vitamin A deficiency will cause xerophthalmia, a severe form of dry eye that can cause corneal scarring and blindness. One of my mentors, Alfred Sommer, a Wilmer trained ophthalmologist and the former dean of the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, showed that a single high-dose capsule of vitamin A administered once every 6-12 months can prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with vitamin A deficiency. Since vitamin A capsules can be manufactured for only a couple of cents, this is one of the most cost-effective public health measures. Beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A is an important ingredient of AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) supplements recommend for patients with macular degeneration to prevent progression of disease. (It should be noted, however, that patients who have a history of smoking should be taking the AREDS 2 supplements which do not contain beta-carotene but rather lutein and zeaxanthin.)
